Real Estate Property Tax

Property owners in the City of Johnstown are required to pay real estate taxes on the real estate they own whether it is undeveloped (vacant) or improved.  The real estate tax is based on the assessed value.  Any questions regarding assessment values should be directed to the Cambria County Tax Assessment office at 814-472-1451.

The City of Johnstown Real Estate tax bills are mailed annually on or around 1st day of April each calendar year. The due dates are as follows (due dates may vary to comply with city ordinance):

  • Discount Amount (Discount 2%) due by May 31
  • Face Amount due by August 1
  • Penalty (10%) added on August 2

Tax millage rates are established by the individual taxing bodies. For 2022, the tax millage rates are as follows:

City of Johnstown 52.4821 mills ($52.4821 per $1,000 of valuation)
Cambria County 33.50 mills ($33.50 per $1,000 of valuation)
Johnstown School District 48.62 mills ($48.62 per $1,000 of valuation)

Business Privilege/Mercantile Tax

A business privilege and/or mercantile license are required for all business located within the City along with a corresponding tax. The tax rate is applied to gross volume after sales tax has been deducted. Some business may require both licenses/taxes. The breakdown is as follows:
