History
The original charter for the City of Johnstown declared “… all that piece of ground called the Point shall be reserved for common public amusements for the use of the said town and its future inhabitants forever.”
The stadium stands as one of Johnstown’s most recognizable and historically significant recreational landmarks. Constructed in 1926 and located at the confluence of the Stonycreek River and Little Conemaugh River, the stadium occupies a site deeply tied to the city’s geography, history, and identity. The stadium was part of a broader movement to invest in public recreation and community infrastructure. Its riverfront location at “The Point” was both symbolic and practical, utilizing available land in the dense urban area. From its earliest days, the stadium was designed as a multi-purpose venue, capable of hosting baseball, football, and large public gatherings. Its scale and central location quickly made it a focal point for civic life in Johnstown.
Baseball and Community Life
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the Point Stadium became best known as the home of minor league baseball in Johnstown, including teams such as the Johnstown Johnnies. It hosted Pennsylvania State League games and a wide range of amateur and semi-professional contests, drawing residents from across the region.
Beyond organized sports, the stadium served as a gathering place where generations of Johnstown families came together, reinforcing its role not just as a sports venue, but as a shared community space.
Flood Control and Transformation
Following the devastating St. Patrick's Day Flood of 1936, Johnstown underwent major flood control improvements, including the construction of the city’s floodwall system. The Point Stadium, situated at the river confluence, became closely integrated with this new infrastructure. The floodwalls have become one of the stadium’s distinct visual features, serving as a lasting reminder of both the city’s history and its resilience.
Today
Today, the Point Stadium, officially known as Sargent's Stadium at the Point, continues to serve as a vital recreational and community venue in the heart of Johnstown. Renamed in recognition of local business investment and support, the stadium honors its historic legacy while supporting modern use. It is home to the Johnstown Mill Rats and also proudly hosts the annual All-American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament (AAABA), one of the region’s most longstanding and celebrated traditions. In addition, the stadium regularly accommodates high school, collegiate, and amateur baseball as well as football, regional tournaments, and community events and festivals. As both an active facility and a historic landmark, it remains a central gathering place that connects Johnstown’s rich past with its vibrant present.
